When nothing really happens

It has happened here. Teargas, running battles with police, broken windows, anarchy in the small downtown state capital city of Olympia, Washington.

May Day in Washington State has become synonymous more with a handful of black clad anarchists who want to break shit than it has for the thousands peaceably marching for worker’s rights or immigration reform.

Anarchists made a bit of trouble in Seattle this year, though not on the scale of last year, but threats of violence and anarchist’s anarchy in the state capital didn’t happen. That may well have been because of the overwhelming police presence and the relatively small protest crowd. There was little chance to throw a brick or a bottle at a bank, a cop, or a journalist and then slip back into the crowd, or down the side alley, undetected. But I suspect any anarchist worth their black hoodie skipped over sleepy little Olympia for Seattle instead.

The police presence on May 1 in Olympia this year was significant. City, county and state police were everywhere downtown.

Riot police carrying “less lethal” bean bag shotguns, paintball guns with pepper capsules, and tear gas launchers were openly on display. An “out of service” transit bus kept on the move through downtown, silhouettes of riot police with shields and samurai helmets showed faintly through dark tinted windows like cardboard cutouts in some kind of art project. (Maybe I’m projecting my own idea there). And riot gear clad cops in a van trailed the small anarchist parade through the downtown corridor as the young crowd shut down traffic and peaceably made their point.

I wasn’t clear on the point.

Burn the banks, kill the police, fuck the media, grow gardens were all chanted or hastily scrawled on cardboard signs. At one point the protesters stopped in the middle of the street undecided as to where to go next. “To the state Capitol,” someone yelled. “It’s closed,” someone else muttered. “It’s a statement,” another replied. After 10 painful minutes of indecision, they ended up hanging a right and snaking back through downtown streets instead. The whole thing died slowly in the end, not with a bang but with a whimper as the protesters slowly disbursed and a guy in a wheelchair showing his skill at wheelies was the only one left.

As the TV news crews and other journalists trailed in their wake or marched along the sidelines with phalanxes of police, I couldn’t help think it was all so … pointless, and more than a little pathetic - for the disorganized protesters with an incoherent message and seemingly absent worldview (“fuck everything” is neither a particularly brilliant nor achievable solution); for the jackbooted police waiting to bust some heads (you know there were a few); and for the jackals hoping for it all to go south before the 6 o’clock news (more than a few). I really do hate this kind of breaking news kinda shit now. It just feeds all the wrong things, and it rarely makes for good art.

I am sympathetic toward protest, peaceable protest. Wanton destruction? Not so much. And damnnnnn, I mean seriously dudes, a good protest is like good photography - you gotta have something to say and you gotta say it well.

As much as I might want to stick it to the big national banks, I’m not going to pick up a brick and throw it through their window. It’s so much more effective, and personally profitable, to just join the member-owned credit union.

In the end, I was more intrigued by the cops and their scary state of readiness. My god, how much was spent on this and, more importantly, what does this paramilitarization of police departments mean? Where is this headed? You know those AR15’s were just a stone’s throw away. Makes you nostalgic for the deputy with a single bullet in his breast pocket.

Peace.

It was a human place. On either side
young women and young men held manmade things
contrived for widening their lives. Some held,
by way of opened books, a separate and singular repose
so much less tense than the precision of any open flower.
There were no flowers; every torso was arranged
to complement the object of its thought. It was understood
the dead could no more lean above guitars or books,
or turn their heads and speak, or list their heads to weep
again. It was among the lucid restive ones we moved,
accompanied by who was ours, through wide halls dense with
empty ornate wooden beds, into a room in red that held
the one bed and window, where we looked away, blurred
as if two books at once were being read to us.

—Kathleen Peirce, “Dreaming of Sleep”
Photography Credit Tom Hyde (via)

robertormerod:

I was recently commissioned to photograph singer Richard Dawson for The Wire. The Wire is such a great independent magazine and Richard is a really great guy to work with. He put up with sitting near an extremely hot swimming pool right before a gig and if your interested you can listen to some of his work here http://richarddawson.net/

Many thanks to Ben at the Wire and Richard
